About Marni

EDUCATION
I hold a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Florida Atlantic University (Davie, FL) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in exercise science w/ a minor in psychology from Transylvania University (Lexington, KY). I completed my dietetic program at the University of Northern Colorado (accredited from the American Dietetic Association) where I received a verification statement as a distance dietetic student (August 2009). I was accepted into the Marywood University (Scranton, PA) Distance Dietetic Internship in April 2010 and began my 10-month, 1200+ hour internship in June 2010. My internship included:
*Community Nutrition rotation (8 weeks) – Preferred Nutrition (specializing in eating disorders), UNF (counseling and health fairs) and a little time at Hospice as well as the St. Augustine Center For Living (residential care facility for the developmental disabled)
*Food Service rotation (11 weeks) – Lakeside Nursing Home
*Long Term Care clinical rotation (5 weeks) – various LTC settings in Jacksonville, FL
*Acute Care Clinical rotation (9 weeks) – St. Vincent’s Hospital in all units (Cancer, GI, infectious disease, ICU, CCU, post-op, etc.)
*Staff Relief (4 weeks) – St. Vincent’s Hospital

After meeting specific educational eligibility requirements by the Commission of Dietetic Registration, I was eligible for the Registration Exam for Dietitians upon completion of my dietetic internship. It is with great excitement that I can say I have officially passed the Registered Dietitian exam and I am a RD! RD's (as opposed to nutritionists, nutrition experts, certified nutritionists, sports nutrition experts and nutrition guru's) are protected by law to provide nutrition information in order to assess, diagnose and treat medical conditions. Dietitians must practice in accordance to the ADA (American Dietetic Association) Code of Ethics, abiding by a set of standards and laws that protect the public."

CERTIFICATIONS and PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

I am a Level-1 USAT Coach (since 2008) and I am a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), The Jacksonville Dietetic Association, The Florida Dietetic Association and SCAN (Sports, Cardiovascular, Wellness and Nutrition). I belong to the Vegetarian Dietetic practice group (ADA) and I have been a member of the ISSN since 2005. I am also certified in CPR by the American Red Cross (since 1996).

SPONSORSHIP and ATHLETIC HISTORY
I have been a Hammer sponsored athlete since 2008 and I am currently an Oakley Women Ambassador. I am also a member of the Elite Team 110 Tri Harder Triathlon team in Jacksonville, FL. I recently finished my fourth IM (IMWI) in 2010 and placed 4th in my age group. More about Marni
I live in Jacksonville, Fl with my amazingly fast husband, Karel, who is Category 1 cyclist. Karel races for the Gearlink cycling team and his specialty is sprinting and criterium racing. Karel recently won the 2010 Florida Cup Series (Pro 1,2) and placed 2nd in the 2010 Spring Florida Point Series (Pro 1,2). Karel also finished the Athens Twilight Criterium in 2011 and has participated in USA crits SpeedWeek for the past 3 years. Karel is the general manager of the Trek bicycle store in Jacksonville, FL. and we are both passionate about the Trek Corporation. Karel is from Czech Republic and has been racing bikes at an Elite level, all of his life.

When I'm not studying, writing articles or training, I LOVE spending time with my chihuahua-Italian Greyhound, Campy (named after Campagnolo, which is an Italian manufacturer of high-end bicycle components). Campy reminds us that life is worth living to the fullest and to make the most of our days here on Earth. We found Campy on Petfinder.com where a family had rescued him behind a building. After spending 2 short weeks with his foster family, Campy came into our lives and we are so lucky to have him as part of our family. We also have two cats (Smudla was rescued from a cat shelter and Madison was found outside our last apartment). We also have lots of fish and love watching them swim around all day long.

I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian since the age of 11 and decided to give up meat and fish because I love all animals (and creatures). I enjoy cooking food that provides healthy nutrients to my body and creating Trimarni "creations". I am inspired by commercials, the food network, cookbooks, the internet and restaurant menus in order to modify meals in a more nutritious and healthy way. I believe we should emphasize food that will fuel daily living, reduce risk for disease and illness and will help to meet performance gains.

I aspire to be a well-known nutrition writer and speaker, educating others how to develop a healthy relationship with food. As a newly credentialed RD, I plan to work within the clinical dietetic field to gain more knowledge in the acute care setting. I am passionate about the human body and I want to learn as much as I can about nutrition and preventing and treating disease.

I hope to inspire others to live a more balanced, healthy and active lifestyle. I truely practice what I preach and I believe that we should put wonderful nutrients into our body and not fear, obsess or feel guilty when it comes to food. I believe there is a time for everything and if you eat well most of the time you don't have to worry about the rest of the time.

In the near future it would be a dream to be on the Ellen Show and any morning News and Talk show. I hope to become an ADA (American Dietetic Association) ambassador and publish books on fueling, healthy and balanced living and cook books. I am a firm believer in using the body (mind and muscles) and setting both long and short term goals.

I could not be where I am today without the support of my parents, my brother and Karel and the unconditional love from Campy. And of course, a big thanks to all of my blog readers who inspire me on a daily basis and keep me motivated to pursue my dreams. Thanks to all the people who support and believe in me...as I dream big and never want to give up.
